What to do, if the "Debian" menu does not show up, although it has been activated with alacarte?
Try:
apt-get install menu-xdg
and you should see the Debian menu entry. As gnome (and KDE) rely on the freedesktop.org structure for menu entries, this package converts the debian style entries to freedesktop.org entries:
Description: freedesktop.org menu compliant window manager scripts
menu-xdg contains menu-methods to convert the Debian menu structure to
the freedesktop.org xdg menu structure.
